THE GOVERNMENT has backed a Catholic grant-maintained school’s decision not to return to the diocese when the opt-out sector is abolished in the autumn. Education Secretary David Blunkett has endorsed the move by St Francis Xavier College in Liverpool to become a foundation school - the only Catholic school in the country to do so. But the archdiocese of Liverpool said it was unconvinced governors and trustees would be able to preserve the Catholic character of the college.
