I was amazed by the analogy used by Richard Winter (Letters, TES, August 23). It is precisely because A-level standards are not as immutable as the distance between London and Leicester that there is any cause for debate at all.

The lasting impression I get as a member of the general public is that, if a professor of education can produce such a bogus comparison, then we have every reason to be concerned about standards in education.
