The latest addition to the ranks of children’s book awards, the Branford Boase Award for a first-time children’s author, is unusual in recognising the role of the editor.

The Branford Boase Award has been set up in memory of author Henrietta Branford and Wendy Boase, editorial director of Walker Books. They enjoyed a long wrking partnership and both died of cancer last year.

The first award was presented yesterday to Katherine Roberts for her environmental fantasy novel Song Quest, and her editor Barry Cunningham of Element Children’s Books.

Song Quest is the first part of a trilogy. Book two will be published later this year.
