A record number of teachers are being trained through employment-based routes such as the graduate teacher programme, new figures show.
Nearly 15 per cent, or 6,000, of the 40,000 people beginning teacher training each year now follow these routes, compared with just 85 in 1997-8, the Teacher Training Agency reported. Of these, about four-fifths are graduates who are looking for a change of career. In 2004-5, more than 5,000 GTP places were created by the agency. Just over 2,000 of these were in priority secondary subjects. A survey of GTP trainees in 2003 showed high levels of satisfaction and confidence in the scheme.
