NUS Scotland is calling on colleges to ensure that student associations are not weakened by mergers under radical regionalisation plans for the FE sector.

The appeal for students to retain their democratic voice came as a potential blueprint for student representation emerged in Edinburgh. The students’ associations of Edinburgh’s Telford College, Jewel and Esk, and Stevenson colleges have united to form Edinburgh College Students’ Association - months before the new college is even launched.

Newly elected president John Martin will be supported by vice-presidents from the three campuses, as well as three dedicated members of staff.

“By creating democratic, well-resourced students’ associations at newly merged colleges, such as we have done here, we can ensure students receive the support and representation they need to succeed in the classroom, progress to university or find work,” said Mr Martin.
