Boys need more role models;Letter

The Government's plans to tackle the under-achievement of boys only scratch the surface of a complex problem.

The rapid decline in the number of male teachers, especially at primary level, greatly concerns the Professional Association of Teachers. Many primary schools have no male teachers, with the consequent lack of male role models for a large number of boys, some of whom will regard teaching and learning as female activities. The association has raised its concerns with the School Teachers' Review Body.

Research has shown that there can often be a mismatch of teaching and learning styles, with girls often benefiting from language and coursework-based teaching while many boys achieve more with an experimental approach.

More work urgently needs to be undertaken in this field.
