Leadership and management are unsatisfactory at a college for blind students, inspectors said this week.

The Royal National Institute of the Blind college is sited on the Loughborough college campus.

Most of its 60 full-time students have a visual impairment, and some have additional learning difficulties. The RNIB vocational college also supports 109 students at 15 centres based in the West Midlands.

Inspectors said several weaknesses identified in a previous inspection remained, including lack of coherence across the curriculum.

The majority of teaching is good or satisfactory but a significant minority is unsatisfactory including lessons in independent living skills, literacy, numeracy, communication and Braille.

The inspectors said that support and guidance was very good, with students developing confidence and self-esteem.

No one from the college was available to comment.
