Breaktime bother

Fear of litigious parents and academic pressure has led break-time to be cut by half in many US schools.

The Associated Press reported this week that break-time after lunch - or recess as it is known in America - had shrunk in many schools from 40 minutes to 20 minutes.

Teachers said they feared legal action if pupils were injured in the playground, but Maine university academics have defended break-time, saying it is crucial for promoting health and fitness as well as social interaction.
