Breathing space

(Photograph) - Roger Canton, 51,(right) has spent more than 30 years teaching, the past 10 in further education.

He had not planned to retire until his mid-50s but when the rule changes were first announced, he considered leaving at the end of term.

"This postponement gives me a breathing space, but I have decided I have got to keep working until I'm 60 as I could not afford to accept early retirement. I need to be able to support my family and my wife's job is not very secure.

"The whole thing has been handled very badly. I hope my union will be able to win more concessions from the Government."
