* The Government’s encouragement for and extra funding of pre-school education are leading to increased demand for training of staff. Northern College, which has developed a BA degree in early childhood studies, has a waiting list of 200 for places. Places on the BA degree are not financed by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council and yet the college cannot charge full costs because nursery nurses and other potential students could not afford the fees. So it is impossible at present to match supply to demand.
