MALAYSIA: Plans to introduce 90 high-tech “smart” schools are continuing despite the downturn in the Malaysian economy, writes Martin Spice. Two million ringgit (pound;330,000) has been allocated to train 828 teachers in smart-school methodology, drawing heavily on the use of computers, and teacher trainers have formulated software for the four key subjects - maths, science, English and Malay. The smart-school concept aims to emphasise creativity and thinking ability rather than rote learning.
