Working with dyslexia

The 1996 Dyslexia Handbook, published by the British Dyslexia Association at Pounds 5 plus postage, explains how to recognise dyslexia and gives support to those affected and their families from early primary education to adulthood. Another publication from the association is a guide for dyslexic adults, Dyslexia: signposts to success, covering topics such as applying to colleges and universities, learning strategies, coping with examinations and writing CVs. Seeing and hearing

How do you spot whether severely disabled people have impaired sight or hearing? A course from Mencap, Manchester University and the Royal School for the Deaf starting in September aims to train parents, carers, non-teaching staff, teachers and therapists to recognise and work with sensory impairments and the whole range of disabilities. It can be taken at certificate level by non-professionals and at diploma or master level by teachers and professionals with appropriate qualifications. Mencap forum

Mencap has organised a conference to be held on May 16 at Westminster College, Oxford, focusing on the theme “Getting it clear: accessible information for people with a learning disability”.
