Roger Pope highlights the benefits of school trips (“Trips: why bother?”, TES, July 21) .

Too many young people now see the outside world only through the windows of a 4 x 4 or on a PC screen. Geography provides an important opportunity to see the real world as it is the only subject where fieldwork is compulsory.

Our society supports hundreds of trips and is developing fieldwork through our action plan for geography.
