* How I agree with Dr Giles Watson on the subject of school uniforms (“Uniforms do nothing for ethos”, TES, April 14).

When I was a teacher, uniforms were strictly enforced with just one argument given in their favour: apparently they “ironed out social differences”. The fact that children from poorer families wore ill-fitting and often ragged hand-me-downs while wealthier children had pristine outfits with clean, ironed white shirts, gave the lie to this.
