OXFORD MATHEMATICS FOUNDATION GCSE. By Jim Kirkby, Peter McGuire, Derek Philpott and Ken Smith. Oxford University Press pound;13.50.

This excellent book organises and presents its material well, using good, full colour illustrations. Students are told at the start of each section what knowledge they should already have, and end-points remind them of what new material they have covered. Review sections and skills breaks give opportunities to consolidate and practise. Definitions of terms are given in the margins and a word list directs students to the relevant sections in the book. No need for a separate revision book - this covers everything.

Ian Wilson is head of Woodcote High School, Croydon, south London
