SCHOOLS in North Lanarkshire are calling in the military in their latest attempt to get pupils into the learning habit.

The involvement of three retired military instructors is not to keep order in a classroom “boot camp”, however, but to provide “challenging vocational training” through team-building and leadership pursuits. Around 100 third-year pupis from five secondary schools who are regarded as disaffected or disruptive will be involved for two years starting in August. They will be allowed to drop two subjects to take part.

Known as Skill Force, the initiative is being backed by the Scottish Executive and the Ministry of Defence, which believe it has worked successfully in England.
