The child killers of two-year-old Jamie Bulger did not get a fair trial, according to the European Commission on Human Rights. If the judgment is backed by the European Court, it could force a rethink on the way children are tried for serious offences in British courts. Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, both 16, were only 11 when they were tried in an adult court. They are expected to appeal to the Strasbourg court later this year, but it cannot overturn the guilty verdicts or order a retrial.
