MEDIA LITERACY COURSES

Courses offered by bfi Education (the British Film Institute) include “Key Stage 2 - Story Shorts”, a demonstration of how to use story shorts to develop literacy. Venues: Stirling, March 8; Norwich, March 15; Sheffield, March 19. “KS3 - Screening Shorts”, will show how to use short films to emphasise character, narrative and setting in literature and introduce terms associated with film. Venues: Manchester, March 3; Sheffield, March 5; Newcastle, March 16, Southampton, March 22. A conference on media education in Europe will be held in Belfast in May.

Secondary pupils studying Macbeth or Romeo and Juliet can take advantage of two workshops run by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The two will build on a visit to see one of the productions in Stratford-upon-Avon. The first will look at the current and previous productions, emphasising how actors’ and directors’ choices affect our understanding of character. The second will investigate the approach of the current productions. Students will create their own mini-version of the play. Fee: pound;18 students; pound;10 teachers. Sarah Keevill

OUTWARD BOUND TO SABAH

Help research marine life, insects and plants, work in an Orang-utan sanctuary, climb Mount Kinabulu and much more on this expedition to the Malaysian part of Borneo, organised by Outward Bound Global Expeditions.

Until recently such expeditions were organised solely for school students but some are now scheduled for adults aged 17 to 25. Outward Bound is a charity supporting disadvantaged young people, so participants can if they wish raise money to cover the cost (pound;3,100 including flights). Other destinations include South Africa, Slovakia and Romania.
