THE VENUS NEWSPAPER COMPETITION FOR SCHOOLS

Venus will cross the face of the Sun on June 8, a rare occurrence first observed in Lancashire in 1639. In celebration, the Royal Astronomical Society is inviting groups of pupils aged 7-11 and 11-14 to submit a newspaper entry by September 10. It should include a cartoon, original poem, people’s reactions, reports on the mythology of Venus, early scientific observations, the hazards a spacecraft would face in space and on Venus, experiments that could be carried out on Venus’s surface and a section on how its climate is an example of global warming. Groups of pupils aged 14-16 and 16-19 are invited to submit a feature article entry of up to 2,000 words with accompanying diagrams and images. Entries to: Venus Competition, Royal Astronomical Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1J OBQ. www.ras.org.uk

LONDON’S VOICES

The Museum of London website’s new oral history project, “You cannot forget VE Day”, features people’s memories of that special day and their reflections on what the end of the war in Europe meant to them. Many had relatives still fighting in the Far East, others were displaced and could not return home and some became disillusioned when life did not improve as quickly as hoped. Users can contribute their own memories.
