Passover exploration

The story and meaning of Passover from Ancient Egypt to the present are explored through activities, music, video and a family events programme at the Jewish Museum, London NW1. Exhibits include magnificent Egyptian statuary from the British Museum, wooden tools like those used by Israelite slaves, a seder table and murals produced by schools.

History conferencing

As part of an Open University project, researchers have been assessing the impact of computer conferencing on Year 9 pupils’ arguing skills as they explored reasons for the rise of Nazism. Findings will be disseminated at a three-week computer conference followed by a training day in Milton Keynes, co-organised by the Historical Association and TeachandLearn. Fee: pound;25. Betjeman competition

As part of the John Betjeman centenary celebrations, the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation is sponsoring a competition for ages 11 to 14 on the poetry of place. Entrants are required to write a poem about any aspect of their surroundings. Poet Laureate Andrew Motion will award the prizes in Bristol on September 9. www.johnbetjeman.commajorevents.htm

Film critics of the year

Film Education invites pupils aged seven to 18 to submit a 200 to 250-word review of any film while mini film fans aged three to seven are asked to draw a scene or poster from a favourite film. Cinema buffs aged 15-19 can apply online for TheFilmCard to obtain 2 for 1 tickets on this year’s specialised films including Goodnight and Good Luck, Syriana and Tsotsi. The scheme is backed by Film Education and Film London.
