The Battle of Hastings is being commemorated this weekend with a knights’ tournament at Battle Abbey and Battlefield, East Sussex. Similar tournaments will be held at Audley End House, Essex, June 10-11; Old Sarum Castle, Wiltshire, June 24-25; Kirby Hall, Northamptonshire, July 15-16; and Scarborough Castle, Yorkshire, July 29-30. Other activities include crafts such as ropemaking and pottery.

Free science workshops June 8

Logotron is offering two workshops on embedding ICT in science at West Midlands Science Learning Centre, Keele University. Key stages 12 will be covered in the morning and KS34 in the afternoon. Both sessions include demonstrations of Logotron packages such as datalogging and simulation and visual mapping.

Music and ICT June 12-13

New products from Expressive Software Projects will be demonstrated at this course in Derbyshire. They include the Dums International, Compose World Create and classroom support materials for use with the interactive whiteboard and VLE systems. Switch access versions of the software are available for disabled pupils.

Food Safety Week June 12-18

Foodlink is co-ordinating events nationwide which highlight the four Cs of food safety - cleanliness, cooking, chilling and cross-contamination.

Songwriting Academy Closes October 2

Competition entrants are invited to submit an original single song on CD and an application stating why they should be part of the Songwriting Academy. The three categories are: under 18s open to solo and group writers, closing October 1; solo writers over 18; group writers over 18.

The last two carry a pound;23.50 fee and close on June 16. Judges will select 20-30 finalists in each category to attend a masterclass and the overall category winners will record their song, have it released and receive home recording equipment.
