Business leads?

I write in response to David Armstrong’s comments in last week’s TES about school leaders needing to learn from business.

I believe his views are a good 10 years out of date. I was amazed by his suggestion that schools should share vision and leadership. Doesn’t he realise this has been going on for a long time? National research in recent years found heads well ahead of their industrial counterparts in key leadership skills. I would be prepared to follow some of the industrial leaders I have met over the years, but only out of curiosity!

Due to the challenge and complexity of leading modern schools, being accountable to so many stakeholders and often being a leader in the local community, I would suggest that industry should seek advice from education, not the other way round.
