It is not only the demographics of the staffroom that impose new pressures on directorates these days. Highland has just lost Marion Moffatt, its education committee clerk of 32 years. It’s not that the council has been careless, we should explain; she has retired.

This lady had the honour of working with six chairs and four directors of education in Highland’s various local government forms, keeping on the right side of the administrative law such notable and varied characters as the Rev Jack Macarthur, Sandy Russell and Val Maciver, and directors the likes of Ronald Macdonald, Charles Edward Stewart and Allan Gilchrist.

Is this a record? And who will run things now for the present frontmen, chair Andy Anderson and director Bruce Robertson?
