Teachers can buy an Apple Mac, Acorn or an Acer multimedia PC. Each comes with a CD-Rom, modem, various CDs, home support (plus a year's on-site maintenance) and educational advice via a helpline. The Mac and Acorn deals include printers, but a printer is optional with the Acer Multimedia PC. Payments are interest free - Pounds 200 down with the remainder paid in 30 monthly instalments. All the packages are just under Pounds 2,000.
A similar scheme was run in Scotland last year offering just Apple Macs, and its success led to this expanded offer being applied nationally. Teachers recognised the value of possessing their own computer at home. SCET expected to sell a few hundred computers, but were surprised when they sold 1,700. The PC offer ends next Friday: the AppleAcorn at the end of august.
