TES books editor Geraldine Brennan on the inside literary track

Meanwhile, Calderdale libraries are running two young readers’ book of the year awards to be presented at literary lunches in June and July. Library staff have drawn up shortlists from which panels from gifted and talented pupils in Calderdale schools will select the winners. Anne Fine’s The More the Merrier appears again on the shortlist for the children’s novel award, judged by pupils in Years 4 to 6 alongside Marginaliens by Philip Gross; Sabine by Tim Kennemore; Indigo’s Star by Hilary McKay; and Loser by Jerry Spinelli. For the teenage novel prize, the Years 7 to 9 judges will choose from: The Various by Steve Augarde; Malarkey by Keith Gray; The Lastling by Philip Gross; A Little Piece of Ground by Elizabeth Laird; and The Crew by Bali Rai.
