FURTHER EDUCATION is responding to the boom in call centres, which are expected to employ up to 37,000 in Scotland within a few years. Edinburgh’s Telford College has opened a training centre sponsored by BT Scotland. Students will follow a new course leading to a Scottish Qualifications Authority certificate, called introduction to call centre skills. They will role-play as customers and operators, and learn computing and telephone skills.

Keir Sim, head of the school of business, said: “Our aim is to provide employers and agencies, which have to spend a lot of money in training their workforces from scratch, with people who already have more advanced skills.”
