CAMBRIDGE University this week launched a nationwide campaign to try to attract more applicants from state schools and colleges.

The campaign, backed by David Blunkett, the Education Secretary, centres on a poster showing striking shots of 14 current students of varied ethnic and social backgrounds, nine from the state sector.

“We want to overturn the hostile preconceptions that still exist today, ” Sir Alec Broers, the university’s vice-chancellor, said. “Cambridge is open to everyone who is bright. It’s not about money, sporting ability or social background.”
