More women should apply to be headteachers to help avert a future leadership crisis, school leaders have been told. Just 37 per cent of secondary school heads are women, despite making up 59 per cent of secondary teachers. In primaries, 68 per cent of heads are women. The annual conference of the National College for School Leadership and children’s services was told there were fewer obstacles than there used to be for women who wanted to reach the top.
