Calling time on 30-minute inspections

I welcomed the establishment of Ofsted as I thought it would provide a national monitoring system. I did not expect it to become so large, expensive, heavy-handed and dependent on quantitative data. As most teachers, governors and parents know, what makes schools successful is complex, hard to measure and often qualitative. Twenty years have passed since the creation of Ofsted. And its very new chief inspector is the first to come directly from a school. Surely now is the time for a substantial review of its purpose and processes?

Martin Roberts, Former headteacher and governor.
