University and Colleges Union (UCU) to call for political consensus around plans for National Education Service

The Conservatives should sign up to Labour’s National Education Service policy, the UCU’s general secretary Sally Hunt is expected to say in a speech on Saturday.

Ms Hunt is set to welcome Labour’s plans for a National Education Service but challenge other political parties to get on board with the policy.

“We hope that other parties pick up this idea so that we can build a consensus around the centrality of education to Britain’s future,” she will say at the union's Cradle to Grave conference today.

"The event has always reflected our view that at its heart education is about the people who do it – whether they are students, researchers, teachers or the thousands of other professionals who make the system what it is," Ms Hunt will add.

The conference will also see shadow further education minster Gordon Marsden join a panel to discuss the future of post-16 education.
