* Cambridge University has welcomed the proposals for widening sixth-form study and says it hopes to see candidates take four or five subjects in the first year.
University backing is seen as essential for the reformulated A and AS levels. Cambridge will attempt to coordinate its entrance exam with the relaunched Special papers.
