I agree with Tom Bennett that schools are fertile, self-contained theatres of drama that have inspired many films (“Class acts”, 3 May). Indeed, there can be few more dramatic professions, with teachers often finding themselves directing and being part of a never-ending piece of theatre. Movies are one thing but what about television? Entertaining programmes such as the BBC’s drama serial Waterloo Road are essentially drivel because they give the impression that schools consist almost entirely of screwed-up, non-academic children and their dysfunctional, emotionally challenged teachers. They also reinforce every stereotype known to man. Producers are failing in their duty to intelligently portray the highly complex world of teaching.
