(Photograph) - Canine custodian: police dog Zac surveys his new training ground - Hayward high school, in Stoke-on-Trent.

The school is one of several which have handed over their grounds to police dog-handlers and their charges for training sessions, in the hope of deterring vandals.

Lastyear Stoke’s schools were burgled 37 times and had 39 cases of vandalism, causing thousands of pounds in damage.

‘This benefits both sides,’ said dog trainer PC Bob Smith. ‘It’s a big advantage to us to have access to new training venues. And of course it helps protect the schools.’
