Spain’s unions know how to call a schools strike - when a leading Scottish education official is holidaying in the country.
John Dobie, Edinburgh’s head of staffing and the budget, arrived in Majorca for a break from both only to find the unions taking strike action, the Balearics not excepted. The demands were familiar. More money, a halt to privatised schools, demands that staffing standards be maintained and pressure for yet more devolution to the regions.
Dobie, needless to say, was standing by for a call from Madrid’s management side. Verily, education for the ‘90s. What’s the Spanish for SJNC?
