Carving knives out for SSTA

A NICE little touch of ecumenism broke out - briefly - at the Educational Institute of Scotland's pre-conference dinner last Wednesday. The reply on behalf of the guests was given by none other than David Eaglesham, general secretary of the Scottish Secondary Teachers' Association.

This is known for most of the time as a "rival union" but on oe night of the year at least it becomes a "kindred organisation" invited to sup with the best of them.

Delegates were in more of a kindred than a rival mood during the conference, as it turned out, and embraced a motion which called for a takeover of the SSTA - oops, called for unity talks to be opened between the EIS and SSTA.
