THE research council currently raises an income of around pound;800,000 from tendering for contracts, in addition to the Government’s grant.

The Executive’s subsidy, however, is intended to support key but loss-making activities such as services to schools, a teacher research network, a newsletter and website, the costs of which will in future have to be covered from council income.

South of the border, the National Foundation for Educational Research receives pound;1.25 million a year from the Government and pound;400,000 to support an information research service for education authorities.
