The agency wants bids from schools, colleges, local authorities and other groups for grants of up to pound;20,000 for imaginative demonstration projects in five fields: children in care (pound;10,000 for each); "catch-up programmes" for disaffected 14 to 16-year-olds (pound;10,000); involving parents in improving the basic skills of older children (pound;7,500); new approaches to basic skills for adults (pound;20,000); new approaches to English as a second language for adults (pound;20,000).
