Catholic head blames apathy on TV’s obsession with trivia

“Trivia-obsessed” game shows like The Weakest Link and the “vacuous list mania” behind the search for the “Greatest Briton” are helping to create a shallow and unstable society, a leading Catholic head says today. Giles Mercer, head of Prior Park college in Bath and chairman of the Catholic Independent Schools Conference, will blame broadcasters for failing to offset these influences with serious news and political affairs programmes, thus encouraging voter apathy among the young.
