A vice-admiral who is a governor at a Devon public school has been appointed chairman of the Funding Agency for Schools, the quango administering finance for the soon-to-be-defunct opted-out sector.

Vice-Admiral Sir Anthony Tippet, 68, has been given a two-year contract. The salary for the part-time post is about Pounds 30,000 a year.
