Children’s charity the NSPCC says it is disappointed that Wales rugby star Gavin Henson - the face of its recent anti-bullying week campaign - is to be prosecuted for public order offences.

The rugby player partner of Charlotte Church has been summonsed to appear at Cardiff Magistrates Court in January following allegations of “rowdy antics” on a train with three other men. New dad Henson, 25, denies the claims.

But the NSPCC Cymru spokesperson said: “While we are not aware of the details, we strongly oppose any form of aggression against others, particularly in the presence of children.”

In last month’s campaign, Henson’s face appeared on posters circulated among Welsh schools.

One passenger who complained about his behaviour was a primary school teacher from Barry. The incident was said to have occurred on the way back from London after the Ospreys had beaten Harlequins.

“One reason Gavin was chosen was because it was rugby world cup year,” the spokeswoman said.

The posters showed Henson telling people: “You’re not alone. If you’re being bullied, tell a friend, tell a teacher or tell your parents. Don’t suffer in silence.”

When the campaign was launched, he said: “It’s important we protect children. Everyone has the right to be themselves.”

In a statement, the Ospreys said the club does not feel Henson’s personal conduct warrants “direct disciplinary action”.

All four men were questioned on December 2 by British Transport Police at Cardiff Central station.
