Sean Coughlan’s delightful account “Day return to Chartres, please” (TES, July 18) shows how easy it can be to make something out of nothing, finances permitting.

I enjoyed reading the article because I like rail travel, I like visiting France, and there was a magnificent piece of architecture accompanying the account, namely Chartres cathedral. Being something of a musician, I would have enjoyed the sound of the music coming from the organ loft had I been a visitor.

My only complaint is that Mr Coughlan did not include any costs for his day out. This would have been very helpful for anyone of a like mind.

For those of us who live in the provinces, it would probably necessitate having to stay overnight in London on two nights making the total cost prohibitive, unfortunately.
