Strike action pending?

Posted by VelmaDinckley

I have never been one for strike action, but I don’t think we can avoid it now. Cuts, teacher re-deployment, changes to pay and conditions for supply teachers, no McCrone, loss of support staff. There is not much else left, except compulsory redundancies. I think the EIS should have spoken up sooner.

I agree. I am so angry about what is happening to Scottish education, not just the pending cuts, but the whole Curriculum for Excellence farce. If this erosion of teaching as a profession is allowed to continue, what are we going to end up with?

The strike would be over compulsory redundancies - no mention of other changes to education provision.

That’s the problem. The EIS has only started making its views known on compulsory redundancies. I would like them to take a stand on all the other things that are going on.

They are all an attack on our profession: they’re chipping away at all our terms and conditions. If they get away with these, what are they going to go for next?

From SSTA website (email to Aberdeen members from general secretary): “Dear Colleague, You will have received a communication from Aberdeen City Council this morning, which is a blatant attempt to blackmail teachers in the authority. This association utterly condemns any attempt to blackmail teachers into accepting a salary reduction. We will take all necessary steps to support members in Aberdeen and will certainly ballot on industrial action, should either of these measures (sic) be imposed.”

If a strike ballot is called in Aberdeen, I am confident union members in Aberdeen will support it. And they of course will be supported by their colleagues in the 31 other local authorities.

I would back you 100 per cent. It may not be long before we are all out on strike.
