A group of S6 pupils from Tiree has produced a computer program that is believed to be the first commercially available spelling-checker for Gaelic.
Tiree High’s Young Enterprise Scotland links officer, Stewart Maclean, says: “The original idea was to sell ink cartridges for printers, as there are 300 households on the island with the same type of printer.
“Then the Gaelic spell-checker was developed and with the proceeds from the sale of the ink cartridges we managed to commission some artwork for the CD-Rom.”
It contains 7,500 Gaelic words, is compatible with Microsoft Word, and can be ordered from Luchag-Ink (from the Gaelic word for mouse and a reference to the company’s first product and pun on the word incorporated) online at www.luchag-ink.org at a cost of pound;18.50.
“This innovation is exactly the kind of approach that Young Enterprise Scotland is all about encouraging,” says YES’s operations and development director, Hunter Wilson.
