A new government team has been set up to tackle hardship. The aim of the Child Poverty Unit will be to halve the number of British children living in poverty by 2010 and to eradicate it by 2020. The unit will be run by the Departments for Children, Schools and Families and for Work and Pensions and will liaise with local services and undertake research to help develop future policies. The Government has also pledged that by 2010 it would be spending an extra pound;2 billion on public services aimed at breaking the cycle of deprivation.
