NICK Welford is, perhaps, to be commended for his self-awareness, but hardly for his judgment.
Not only does his letter provide a splendid illustration of the old adage “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach” straight from the horse’s mouth (or perhaps donkey’s mouth); it also provides the perfect justification for the miserly pay increase which was announced on the following day.
Two comments from pupils about teachers entrusted with their education will long remain in my mind: “We could live with the fact that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but he will keep arguing the point” and “I can tolerate ignorance but I don’t think it ought to be disseminated”.
