THE GATHERING. By Isobelle Carmody. Barn Owl pound;5.99

This book slipped out of print soon after it was first published here in 1997, but it’s unputdownable: well written, truly scary and full of extraordinarily powerful depictions of a wide range of characters.

There’s something ghastly going on in Cheshunt. It’s to do with the abattoir and a group of young people who’ve been brainwashed into conformity. Nat and some of his friends are pitted against the forces of darkness. Be warned, in one scene a dog is horrifically murdered.
