At key stages 2-4, pupils "should be taught about the legal and human rights underpinning society (and) the need for mutual respect and understanding".

A class could be given a recent tabloid front page and asked to underline words and images that encourage readers to view refugees and asylum seekers in a negative way. They could be invited to rewrite the main feature using detail and images from original sources putting the events being reported on in more positive light.

Pupils could contrast this modern article and their own re-write of it, with a similar front page from the 1970s discussing how coverage of migrants may or may not have changed since then. For example how important in each article is skin colour? Has what is frightening about outsiders changed?
