Citizenship initiatives at a Dundee special school have been identified as examples of good practice in the sector by school inspectors.
Children at Kingspark School, who are aged five to 18, have gained confidence thanks to activities in the community. Notably, the school choir performed to the public at the city’s Caird Hall.
Pupils are learning about people in other countries after links were established with a school in Malawi, and they are “fully involved” in caring for the environment through recycling and visits to areas of interest. In their own school, members of the pupil council have improved their playground and regularly discuss health issues with staff.
Enterprise activities were also praised by HMIE in a report published last month. Secondary pupils achieved an Access unit by making and selling bird food.
