Citizenship lacking in primaries

Primary schools offer practically no formal citizenship education and do not introduce issues of democracy and justice to children. Annabelle Dixon, last year's TES research fellow, reached these conclusions after a year-long project at Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge. Citizenship at key stage 1 simply taught rules and obedience while debate, critical thinking and teamwork was only considered suitable for older children, interviews with 10 headteachers showed.
