Heads in London this week defended their schools.

Carol Smith, head of Cardwell primary, in a deprived part of Greenwich, south London, said: “It is challenge but an inspiration to work here. She made the comments as she won the Promethean Award for primary head of the year at the national teaching awards.

Another London head, Dr John Reavely, of Rooks Heath school, Harrow, won secondary head of the year.

He said: “London and my school in particular is a dynamic place to work, a real challenge.”
